We read, hear, and see the word "AI" everywhere today.
Ever since ChatGPT blew up in late 2022, people have started realizing AI's potential and how game-changing it can be.
But what most people don't realize is that AI has been around for about a decade, in its true form, quietly making our lives easier.
Yes, you read that right!
From your morning commute, where AI helps navigate the quickest routes (Google Maps), to your nightly entertainment, where it recommends the perfect movie (Netflix), AI is already deeply integrated into your daily routine.
In this article, I’ll list 10 AI examples in everyday life that have been subtly improving our lives long before it became a buzzword.
10 AI examples in everyday life you probably never noticed
Without further ado, let’s go over everyday artificial intelligence applications that have been influencing us in simple, often unnoticed ways for years.
1. Digital billboards
Billboards have come a long way from being just static signs. AI-powered marketing billboards analyze the people passing by and adjust the content displayed based on real-time data.
Using cameras and sensors, these billboards gather information about age, gender, and the mood of people nearby. For instance, if a billboard detects a group of teenagers, it may display ads for the latest sneakers or trendy gadgets.
AI in digital billboards also takes into account the weather conditions to show the most appropriate content. On a hot sunny day, the billboard might display ads for cold drinks or ice cream. On a rainy day, it might switch to showing ads for umbrellas or cozy indoor activities.
2. Smart watches
Smartwatches have become a lot more than just devices to tell the time. With the help of AI, they track your fitness activities, monitor your health, and predict potential health issues.
The watches use AI to analyze data from sensors to give you insights into your sleep patterns, heart rate, and physical activity. For instance, they can track your steps and provide suggestions to help you reach your fitness goals. They also remind you to stand or move around if you’ve been sitting for too long.
AI helps smartwatches learn your habits, such as when you typically wake up, and can adjust your morning alarms to ensure you get enough rest. In addition, AI-powered smartwatches can identify irregular heartbeats and alert you to possible health concerns.
They also use AI for voice recognition, so you may control your device hands-free and perform tasks like sending messages or setting reminders.
3. Google Lens
Google Lens is one of the best AI examples in everyday life that transforms your smartphone camera into an intelligent visual search engine. When you point your camera at an object, Google Lens can instantly recognize it and provide useful information.
Google Lens can also help with translation by reading text in different languages and showing you the translation right on your screen. It is especially useful when you're traveling and need to understand signs or menus.
Additionally, Google Lens can be a great shopping companion. If you see a product you like, simply point your camera at it, and Google Lens will help you find similar items online
4. Fall/Crash detection
Fall and crash detection features are innovative AI examples in everyday life that have become increasingly common in smart devices like phones and smartwatches.
If you fall or are involved in a crash, these devices use sensors like accelerometers and gyroscopes to detect sudden movements or impacts.
Once a potential fall or crash is detected, the device will alert you with a notification and give you the option to dismiss it if you’re okay.
However, if you don’t respond within a specific timeframe, the device will automatically contact emergency services and send them your location.
Crash detection features now come built into devices like iPhone 14.
5. Video games
AI plays a huge role in making video games more exciting and immersive. When you play a game, AI controls the behavior of non-player characters (NPCs) and makes them react realistically to your actions.
Even in some single-player games, the enemies you fight, or teammates you rely on are often controlled by AI. When you play against AI opponents, they learn from your moves and develop strategies to keep up with your skills.
Beyond opponents, AI also powers the worlds you explore in games. It controls things like weather patterns, how animals behave, and how traffic flows in a virtual city. This creates a more realistic and dynamic environment that feels alive.
Some video game developers use AI to create levels, adjust difficulty based on your skill level, and craft storylines that unfold based on your choices.
6. Navigation services
When you use navigation apps like Google Maps or Waze, AI analyzes vast amounts of data in real time to provide the best possible routes. The AI learns from millions of users on the road and constantly updates conditions to get you there quicker.
AI predicts traffic patterns and suggests alternative routes to avoid delays during rush hours or in unfamiliar areas. The voice-guided directions you receive while following a route through Google Maps are also AI examples in everyday life.
Cab booking services like Uber and Lyft also rely on AI to match you with the closest driver and give you an estimated fare upfront. The AI considers factors like traffic and demand to make sure you get a ride quickly and at a fair price.
7. Facial recognition in smartphones
Almost all smartphones now use facial recognition to unlock your phone with a simple glance.
When you set up facial recognition, your phone takes a bunch of pictures of your face from different angles.
Then, it uses an AI-based program to create a map of your facial features, like the space between your eyes or the shape of your jawline. This map gets stored securely on your phone.
When you try to unlock your phone later, the camera scans your face again and compares it to the stored map. If it matches, voila! Your phone unlocks. The entire process happens almost in real-time, thanks to the AI algorithms that process and analyze the data quickly.
Facial recognition is also used for other functions like logging into apps and authorizing payments. Also, the technology is smart enough to recognize you with changes in your appearance, such as different lighting, new hairstyles, or even wearing glasses.
8. Adaptive charging in smartphones
Many people charge their phones overnight, which can lead to overcharging and reduce battery performance over time.
So, if you typically plug your phone in before bed and wake up around the same time each day, adaptive charging will hold off on delivering the final 20% or so of charge until closer to when you wake up.
Adaptive charging extends your smartphone's battery life by reducing overcharging cycles that occur overnight. This type of AI used in everyday life basically analyzes your routine, such as when you plug in your phone and when you unplug it, to optimize the charging schedule.
9. Gmail’s spam detection
Ever wondered how Gmail keeps your inbox clean and free of those annoying spam emails? All thanks to a super-smart spam detection system powered by AI.
Every time an email arrives, Gmail’s AI scans it to determine whether it’s legitimate or spam. It analyzes various elements of the email, such as the sender's address, the subject line, the links, and the content within the message.
The AI uses patterns learned from millions of emails to identify common traits of spam, like misleading subject lines or suspicious links.
If an email is flagged as potential spam, it is automatically moved to the Spam folder. So, this AI example makes sure you don’t have to spend time sorting through junk emails and can focus on the messages that matter.
10. Autocorrect
Autocorrect features found in Swiftkey, or Grammarly are AI examples in everyday life that almost all of us use without even realizing they are AI-powered.
When you type a message or email, autocorrect uses AI algorithms to analyze the words you’re writing and predict the correct spelling or word choices. If you mistype a word or use a common abbreviation, autocorrect will suggest the correct spelling or automatically change it for you.
The AI behind autocorrect learns from your typing habits and the context of your text. For example, if you frequently type a certain word or phrase, autocorrect will recognize it and make fewer mistakes.
It's not perfect, of course – sometimes it may misinterpret what you're trying to type – but it does save you from a lot of embarrassing typos.
Benefits of everyday AI
AI is almost everywhere in our lives to make things a whole lot easier and smoother. Here are a few top benefits of everyday AI:
